FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CREAM CITY MEDICAL SOCIETY URGES MILWAUKEE RESIDENTS TO "TAKE THE TEST, TAKE CONTROL" IN HONOR OF NATIONAL HIV TESTING DAY Organization hosts kick off event on June 27 to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS Milwaukee, WI %u2013 February 25, 2009 %u2013 Cream City Medical Society (CCMS) will kick off National HIV Testing Day with its Fourth Annual "Take the Test, Take Control" event on June 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Augusta M. LaVarnway location of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee, 2739 North 15th St. It is open and free to all Milwaukee residents who want to stop the spread of HIV through education and testing. In addition to free rapid HIV testing as well as testing for gonorrhea and chlamydia onsite, the event includes interactive panel discussions, workshops and access to a variety of community resources. "Take the Test, Take Control" is made possible by the efforts of a planning committee consisting of several HIV Testing and Education organizations. "There are more than 10,000 individuals that have tested positive for HIV in Wisconsin since the start of the epidemic," explained Dr. Natasha Travis, president of Cream City Medical Society. Milwaukee carries the burden for this epidemic with more than 50 percent of reported cases in the state. Today, there are more than one million people living with HIV in the Unites States. About one-fourth of those with HIV have yet to be diagnosed and are unaware of their infection. To defeat HIV/AIDS, there needs to be a reduction in the number of people who have become infected. Education leads to prevention which is the only way to stop this disease from spreading. Please call the Cream City Medical Society at 414-289-CCMS (2267) for more information. About Cream City Medical Society Cream City Medical Society (CCMS) was established in Milwaukee, WI 1927, under the leadership of Dr. Richard Herron. The Cream City Medical Society is the first and only Milwaukee-based 501c.3 non-profit organization of African-American physicians. It is a Chartered Chapter of the National Medical Association, which is the nation´s oldest, and largest association representing African-American physicians. The mission of CCMS is to eliminate minority health disparities. About National HIV Testing Day June 27 is National HIV Testing Day. The goal of this day is to identify people who are HIV-positive and don´t know it so they can access treatment and live longer, healthier lives. It also prevents new HIV infections by increasing education, awareness, and access to voluntary counseling and testing (VCT). National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) is an annual campaign produced by the National Association of People with AIDS to encourage at-risk individuals to receive voluntary HIV counseling and testing.
